Abstract
This work is dedicated to the environmental sustainability. The aim of the thesis is to highlight what are the characteristics of the communication processes implemented in the sustainable art. Firstly, three artistic currents have been identified: Street Art, Recycling Art and Land Art in order to obtain a picture of the current artistic panorama that debates environmental issues. Secondly the peculiar communicative processes of the most representative artists operating in this field have been analyzed.
It was essential to refer to different and complementary disciplines (art, history, sociology, etc..) in conducting the analysis.
The refusal to use museum spaces to exhibit their art is a common feature of Street Art and Land Art that has been identified.
In addition, the first art movement uses the urban space (its streets and its public dimensions) to manifest itself and, as such, it is visible to the public in all of the creation steps since the artists that perform it operate directly in front of it. The second one conversely grows in bare nature, uncontaminated and semi-deserted spaces. Finally, the Art of Recycling could be practiced both indoor and outdoor.
Thanks to the application of three different communication schemes, derived from the Jakobson scheme, it was possible to highlight the communication methods adopted by the three art movements examined.
The analysis results are the following. In the case of Street Art, the scheme of amplified communication has made it possible to highlight the importance of the role assumed by the media, as channels of greater diffusion of the work's message.
Regarding the art of recycling, the dimension can be public and reserved for the museum space. In this communication process the importance of the relationship between the issuer and the recipient has been highlighted, while the role of the media can be considered secondary.
Land Art considers communication as an exchange in which the cooperative relationship between the issuer and the receiver plays a central role in deciphering the message code. Through the definition of the current and the presentation of some works, a debate on the media role (especially on the photography’s one) was found. The relationship between man and nature is therefore declined in all the methods described within the three currents analyzed.
Street Art and the art of recycling explicitly deal with the problems of environmental sustainability with the aim of increasing awareness.
