Abstract
The relationship between education and fertility is a very complex one. Some studies have reported no significant links, others have reported a clearly negative relationship between the two variables especially in most developed countries. The goal of this thesis is to test how empowering female education by narrowing the education gap between women and men in secondary level will affect fertility rate in developing countries where most of the times education is insufficient, and the status of women is neglected. The study investigates this relationship using a panel data of 154 countries for 28 years. The results, were reached by using OLS specifications, show a negative relationship between secondary level enrollments in education and fertility and education gender gap and fertility. These findings are especially important for developing countries especially in African regions where fertility rates are among the highest in the world. The subject deserves more attention for further investigation in the future. |
