Riassunto analitico
In recent years, the international expansion towards new territories and opportunities has demonstrated to be a valuable strategy for firms’ prosperity and development. However, often companies, especially small and medium ones, struggle in gaining foreign market shares due to their insufficient experience and new situations that require additional human and financial resources. The aim of this thesis project is to analyse the internationalisation of firms and the role played by the export consortium in helping them overcoming some difficulties. More specifically, the paper firstly presents the internationalisation options among which companies can choose, considering also strategies linked to the digital improvements reached by global economies and to the new scenario faced by firms due to the emergence triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. To operate internationally, companies need specific competencies and resources, and sometimes they can even exploit services provided by public and private institutions, such as information- and financial-related ones aimed at supporting firms in their expansion. Given the competitive environment with which companies deal, sometimes, cooperating strategies can be winning solutions to overcome resource voids and speed up the penetration of new countries. In this context, the export consortium could be a tool to help firms coping with their deficiencies and internationalise more easily. Indeed, by jointly developing promotional activities abroad and making use of the services offered, companies have the possibility to enhance their international management capabilities and expertise. The thesis project concludes with the analysis of the Coopexport case study, an export consortium made of cooperatives operating in the manufacturing and service sectors and the attempt to re-launch it after being inactive for four years. Based on the literature considered and the analysis carried out, the results confirm companies’ need of services to cope with their deficiencies and the important role played by the export consortium in facilitating it. The literature used was taken from different sources both in English and Italian, such as articles, reports, websites and textbooks. The research of articles and reports was conducted through online journals and bibliographic databases like Emerald Insight, ScienceDirect and others available on Google Scholar. In addition, chapter 4 includes some qualitative and quantitative information personally collected through a questionnaire made of close and open questions submitted to cooperatives during online interviews. These data are about their past and current foreign operations, as well as future plans for their international expansion and they were subsequently processed using Excel and Tableau.
