Riassunto analitico
This paper aims to provide a first comparison between China and the United States on the subject of foreign direct investment in Italy. This work is part of a larger research project that studies Chinese investments in our country. It was therefore considered appropriate to study those carried out by American companies in order to verify the differences in approach and motivation between the two investors. The first part was devoted to the theoretical analysis, that is on the modalities and the effects that foreign direct investments have on the host country and on the trends that follow all over the world and in particular in Italy. The focus then shifted to the intercultural and managerial problems that American and Chinese companies may encounter outside their national context. The second part of the document proposes a research activity on which the comparison between China and the United States is based. By means of a database downloaded from the portal of Italian companies AIDA, it has been tried to outline the phenomenon in progress by carrying out several queries. The various aspects of these transactions were then examined, looking at the similarities and divergences between those made by American and Chinese investors and trying to provide an overview of the phenomenon as a whole. In particular, it investigated the type of operations implemented and from which types of companies, which sectors were most attractive and which regions were the most important. The focus was therefore on the manufacturing sector, analyzing the level of technology sought by both investors and the motivations. Finally, some business cases of Italian companies passed under American ownership have been investigated, looking for the reasons from both points of view, observing the performance before and after the acquisition and the governance modalities of the new owners, and cross-referencing the data obtained with those already available for the Chinese side.
