This thesis aims at analyzing the implications of coronavirus pandemic in the field of retail, considering business models and the capabilities required to cope with the adverse effects of a pandemic. The first three chapters are explanatory, whereas the fourth one has an empirical nature. Indeed, the first chapter outlines and explicit the concept of disaster and consider the theme of organizational crisis, pointing out the process of crisis management. The second one introduces the study of resilience and dynamic capabilities that retailers need to put into action to limit and overcome the adverse effects of a crisis and its implications on business model innovation. The third part depicts the path of coronavirus diffusion over the world and its impact on the retail sector, highlighting the most significant implications for future trends and adaptations that retailers should take into consideration in order to prosper in the sector, also considering the new modifications concerning supply chain and business model. Finally, the last chapter analyzes how Coop Italia has organized to respond to the new context imposed by the pandemic, which resources and skills has activated, integrated, or redefined to increase its resilience to the impact of Covid-19. Consequently, evaluate how the methods and operational logic undertook by Coop Italia have changed in times of pandemic. In order to study the case of Coop Italia, a qualitative approach was undertaken, through consultation of company documents and interviews focused on the deepening of the topic.
Finally, the outcomes of the study of behaviors during coronavirus pandemic highlight the importance of resilience in adapting business structures in a mutable and turbulent environment to reach promptness, adaptability and flexibility. This thesis leaves room for future studies on resilient practices implementation in business considered under a more managerial perspective.
