Riassunto analitico
The aim of this master’s degree thesis is to further analyze the impact of market concentration on the profitability of firms in the Italian manufacturing sector. The first chapter describes the sector using variables such as the “Indice Sintetico di Competitività”, the debt/equity ratio, and the liquidity ratio while also considering the currents of thoughts representing the current literature on the topic. The second chapter develops a statistical analysis of the two variables using descriptive statistics and scatterplot to evidence the existence of clusters or outliers. the third chapter mainly focuses on the econometric analysis of the relationship with the use of the OLS model to assess how the signs and the levels of significance change throughout the models with the addition of each regressor. In conclusion, the relationship between the two variables of interest (market concentration and profitability) is both positively and negatively correlated depending on which variable representing market concentration and profitability are used. The results are considered to be representative of the economic environment characterizing the Italian manufacturing sector. However, further analysis on the topic is strongly recommended including micro firms and other regressors not present in the analysis.
