China has gradually become a crucial partner of many countries in the world, spreading its presence in every continent by investing abroad through direct investment. EU member states are among China’s investment destinations. Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) outflows in the European Union have gone up considerably recently and has usually received the suspicion from the host country. Chinese FDI in the EU is still underestimated and the academic literature has not given the exact answer to explain for the behaviour of Chinese investors. Therefore, this thesis will draw a comprehensive picture of Chinese FDI activities in 28 EU member states over 20 years, from 2000 to 2020 in which main kinds of Chinese FDI in the EU with their characteristics, the evolution of Chinese FDI in the EU, investment motivations and the factors of determining location decisions will be analysed.
