Abstract
The present study aims to analyze the construction of legitimacy in the CSR communication of major Russian and U.S. oil and gas corporations, which, being considered controversial due to the harmfulness of their products for the natural environment and society, are often perceived as illegitimate organizations engaged in unscrupulous businesses, and face constant and significant legitimacy issues. In the light of this, the purpose of the present study is therefore to examine Russian and U.S. oil and gas companies’ efforts to portray themselves and their business as legitimate in their CSR reports in order to gain social license to operate and guarantee corporate long-term survival. More to the point, the study aims to examine the use of credibility-enhancing strategies proposed by Du and Vieira (2012) and Moratis (2017) and of Van Leeuwen’s legitimation strategies (2008) in the CEO letters, a section of the reports contributing to the strengthening of corporate credibility and legitimacy. Paying special attention also to the historical circumstances which massively influenced the evolution of CSR practice and communication in Russia and U.S., the final aim of the study is to compare the use of credibility and legitimation strategies in the CSR communication of Russian and U.S. firms, highlighting similarities and differences in the adoption of the strategies.
The materials considered for the analysis consist of a corpus of ten CSR reports published in 2018 by five Russian and five U.S. large oil and gas companies. A corpus-driven approach was applied to the analysis, which was divided in three main steps. First, the entire CSR reports were examined and wordlists with the most frequent words were generated by means of AntConc in order to identify the most recurrent topics. Then, the focus of the analysis shifted to the CEO letters to stakeholders, which were examined manually in order to identify the credibility-enhancing strategies and legitimation strategies. The results of the analysis on the CEO letters were compared emphasizing similarities and differences in the use of the strategies. The findings revealed that the strategies are adopted extensively in the CEO messages and confirm the companies’ compelling need to gain and maintain legitimacy and credibility in the eyes of stakeholders. Moreover, similarities and differences in the use of the strategies were interpreted considering the influence exerted over CSR communication by the context in which CSR practices developed in Russia and U.S.
