Riassunto analitico
My panel data investigates the determinants of international students from out-bound countries to Italy. The influx of foreign students from developing to developed countries keeps increasing over time as a result of many factors which ranges from economic, social, cultural and political. Italy being one of the European Countries has become a destination country that has been welcoming students from developing regions like Africa, Asia and other countries. Therefore, the work employs the gravity model of trade in testing the hypothesis whether these determinants actually have impact on the international students migration and presence in Italy. To measure these determinants, data was sourced from Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca to obtain the number of international students in Italy between the period of 2010-2020. A database comprising the dependent and independent variables was built using excel. Furthermore, I used an OLS regression model comprising 125 developed and developing countries for a period of 11 years. Results shows that the gravity model variables are significant with expected signs. Other factors such as unemployment rate, political stability, trade indices (exports and imports) and educational enrolment are all significant. This further reveal that these determinants are crucial for the continuous and increasing presence of international students in Italy and other developed countries.
