Abstract
The rapid and tumultuous socio-economic changes that have characterized the worldwide scenario over the last decades have completely transformed the approach of organizations in conducting their business. In the contemporary digital society, firms’ major assets are no longer only their plants and factories, or other real capital, as was the case in the last century. New sources of strength and influence, above all communication skills and the relative value of the pieces of information made available to the public, are indeed becoming increasingly crucial for the development of profitable companies in todays’ extremely interconnected society. The study “CORPORATE COMMUNICATION AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: A CORPUS-BASED ANALYSIS OF CSR REPORTS IN THE ENERGY INDUSTRY” finds its roots in our deep interest and motivation in understanding how modern corporations present and value their socially responsible practices in official disclosures, more precisely in their corporate social responsibility reports. In order to fully comprehend and figure out the dynamics underlying companies’ communication activities, our research is divided into two main parts. The first portion of this dissertation includes a comprehensive analysis of the available literature and it is subdivided into three chapters to allow a more precise and well-structured examination. Chapter one gives us the possibility to focus on some crucial interrelated topics connected to the wide and complex notion of corporate communication, such as “corporate image”, “identity”, “culture”, “reputation” and “stakeholder theory”. In the second chapter, we carry out an in-depth analysis of the ambiguous notion of Corporate Social Responsibility by focusing on the historical evolution of the concept as well as on its contemporary definitions and perspectives. The third and last chapter of the literary review is devoted to the examination of the main features of the corporate social responsibility report: the main tool exploited by organizations to provide their several stakeholders with information concerning their CSR initiatives and programs. As far as the second part of our research is concerned (Chapter 4), it is entirely dedicated to the personal corpus-based analysis of eighteen CSR reports published by six extremely profitable and successful companies operating in the energy industry over the last three years: 2019, 2020 and 2021. The aim of this analysis is to explore the linguistic expressions of corporations’ commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility by analyzing frequently occurring words, their collocates and phraseology derived from text through computational means. With the support of corpus linguistics tools and the online software SketchEngine, the CSR disclosures issued by the “Big Oil Supermajors”, “New Seven Sisters” and “Green Supermajors” under examination are analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively in the attempt to shed light on a diversified repertoire of linguistic and argumentative strategies adopted by companies to persuade their stakeholders of their dedication to sustainability principles.
