Riassunto analitico
Starting from the general topic of the ICT sector in China, the document aims at analysing one of its main branches, the Internet of Things (IoT), which has increasingly become a field of strategic interest for the Chinese government. In particular, the work is structured into three sections: the first, is a general analysis of the ICT sector; the second highlights the main policies undertaken by the Chinese government to enhance the spread of digital technologies in the country; the third focuses on the Internet of Things, towards which companies are paying increasing attention due to its high innovative potential. It follows a more detailed explanation of the content of each section. Chapter 1 outlines the ICT sector and shows its value on the global scenario. First, it is provided a definition of the just mentioned industry; then, are presented some statistical data, in particular the main indicators taken into consideration are those about the internet usage and the mobile phone usage. After a general overview, the document focuses on China, highlighting the current status of the country through the description of its ICT sector, subsectors and the comparison with the principal world economies. Finally, it is analysed the ICT development index to observe the evolution overtime of the ICT sector. After having understood the importance of ICT for China, Chapter 2 presents the main policies undertaken by the Chinese government to foster the ICT spread over the country. Specifically, the attention is on the Internet Plus policy: after a description of the economic and social background in which it has born, are defined the reasons that brought to its adoption, the objectives it intends to reach, the strategies undertaken to make it effective, and the potential benefits for the economy. President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang explicated need for China to transit towards high-end manufacturing, in fact, despite being the world leader in terms of output volumes, China is still relatively weak in terms of innovation and core technologies. In order to reach this objective and fill the innovation gap, China is heavily investing into IoT technologies. Thus, the next chapter deals with this specific ICT subsector. Chapter 3 provides a basic analysis of the IoT, namely, its definition, its sub-groups, the main objectives pursued and its applications. It delivers data about the usage of IoT devices and their diffusion at the global level and then it highlights the position of China, which is increasingly adopting IoT solutions both at industrial and consumer level. The Chinese government is heavily investing in the development and growth of this ICT sub-sector, in fact, China’s Ministry of industry and information technology’s (MIIT) 12th five-year development plan explicitly discussed the importance of IoT and elaborated on how to double the IoT market by 2020. Furthermore, As main expression of the IoT diffusion in China, Chapter 3 focuses on the rise of Smart Cities and Smart Factories, providing an insight into the future scenarios that the adoption of the IoT can bring and to display possible limitations of IoT solutions. To conclude, the document offers observations about the topics taken into consideration in the previous chapters, in particular, the impact on the Chinese economy and on China’s role on the global scenario. In addition, are highlighted limitations/eventual issues linked to the policies undertaken and opportunities that can emerge with the further development of new digital technologies.
