Abstract
In response to the growing competitive pressures in the job market, being able to communicate to HR recruiters a conscious, fierce, and coherent identity, can significantly enhance employment opportunities.
Promoting and expressing themselves, namely doing personal branding, has become an imperative of the 21th century, especially with the advent of the Internet.
Starting from an analysis of the aspects that form the concept of identity and from the evolution of its meaning during the centuries, the dissertation illustrates the different platforms and tools through which individuals express their identity online. In particular, the work presents the concepts of Web 2.0, social media, and User Generated Content (UGC).
Then, the focus of the thesis shifts to the real concept of personal branding, namely the marketing process to strategically distinguish a man, name, image, or career from the one of contenders. In the postmodern society, individuals are used to expressing themselves through their emotions and instincts, their consumption choices, and above all, social media. These latter assure the worldwide and real time sharing of a personal brand and grant the creation of a multitude of useful connections.
Empirical evidence is provided to support the thesis that an online personal branding strategy may be the key to the management of a valuable business centred on the personal brand itself.
The dissertation closes with an analysis of primary data collected with a questionnaire, to investigate the importance and effectiveness of managing an online identity in the deployment of personal branding strategies for professional purposes.
