Abstract
The starting point of this thesis is a discussion about what can be considered game into context that are not properly gameble, and from this move to an analysis of how marketing and advertising use playable cues into their strategies and communication campaign.
For develop an analysis able to touch the main aspects of these phenomena I will to apply instruments coming from two different filed of studies: semiotic and game studies.
Semiotic will be used for set the theoretical structure of the analysis, trying to identify what are the main dynamics implied in these communicative processes. Starting from a general introduction with the aim of identify cues and application in communicative processes, this step will be useful for focus the attention on mechanisms of our ordinary communication that can work in different ways if applied at playable dynamics. Afterwards will follow the identification of a value structure, through the application of the semiotic square and an analysis of the actant system. The application of these tools will help with the identification of those communicative structures that allows playable mechanisms. Subsequently, once identified structures and mechanisms, I’ll try to apply them at the speech, establishing a way through which this can be gamified and, consequently, develop a certain kinds of applications into the world of marketing and business communication.
Game studies will play a fundamental role because, applying the structures identified though the semiotic tools, will highlight the way in which these mechanisms actually works in games. Considering that the focus of this analysis aren’t games but mostly, how gamified dynamics helps non-game environments, the aim of this part of study will regard a definition of what can be considered interaction and why interaction is at the roots of gamification. Working with interaction and considering the relationship between a user and the content with which he/she has to interact, we can search into this process the keys for define how and where gamification works.
The analysis will also consider a process of comparison and develop of how gamification was applied by the several authors from semiotic and game studies points of view, identifying into their analysis a red line beyond marketing applications.
In the last part of the thesis will be considered cases history useful for define practical applications of gamified mechanisms in business communication, in particular with regard on co-creation and interactive advertising. These applications represent just two example of what can become the development of gamified mechanisms if applied to the business communication needs. The example of Widiba, took from bank marketing, represents a successful application of co-creating activities implied in the development of online services for banks. Shazam for Tv instead, is a practical application of how interactive advertising is starting to be applied to more classical ways of advertising for tv, radio and online marketing.
