Abstract
Nowadays, the podcast formula is gaining worldwide success and thus it is raising the interest around this relatively new media which is used in communication. Podcasting is a tool that may be adopted by enterprises with the aim of attracting potential clients and engaging business people in the activities of the company, but it could also be used as a means of communication in order to educate and disseminate specialised knowledge. The subject of the present dissertation is a case study about The EY Sustainability Matters Podcast, a podcast released by the Ernst & Young (EY) organisation. The EY is a global organisation that offers professional services to entrepreneurs, firms and governments, and it operates in the economic, financial, and environmental field. In recent years, the organisation has launched several podcasts on different topics, which have been published free on multiple platforms, including Spotify, so everybody can have access to them. The aim of the present research is to carry out a linguistic analysis investigating the strategies employed in The EY Sustainability Matters Podcast in order to disseminate knowledge to a target audience.
First and foremost, a theoretical background has been provided in Chapter 1 with the objective of exploring the main characteristics of the podcast in analysis and discussing the strategies used in terms of communication, persuasion, and knowledge dissemination.
Chapter 2 has been dedicated to the description of the methodology, data, and methods employed to carry out the linguistic analysis. The approach used is strictly qualitative. Initially, the corpus – made up of the transcripts of the episodes retrieved from the EY official website – has been examined by detecting some specific linguistic elements in order to facilitate the search of the strategies employed. Afterwards, the transcripts have been investigated in depth with the aim of identifying the cognitive, communicative, and persuasive strategies used, relying on the theories presented in the previous chapter.
Chapter 3 reports the findings relative to the linguistic analysis, together with some early observations. The results clearly show the techniques employed in The EY Sustainability Matters Podcast in order to communicate specialised knowledge to a target audience and persuade them to apply it in a business context.
Chapter 4 is dedicated to discussions and final remarks about the information obtained. To sum up, the communicative power of podcasting has been exploited by a global organisation aimed at sharing a specific knowledge and educating a target audience about a particular topic. To achieve these goals, various strategies have been employed – cognitive, communicative, and persuasive – as The EY Sustainability Matters Podcast has a hybrid nature: firstly, communication cannot be identified within the traditional polarity expert-to-expert or expert-to-laymen, rather the degree of specialisation lies at an intermediate level; secondly, the podcast tool is an oral form of communication, while the content and the purpose of the podcast in analysis are professional, so the context is both formal and informal; thirdly, the discourse presents a strong persuasive component as the podcast concerned attempts to affect the target audience and increase awareness about a delicate issue which is becoming increasingly important nowadays, namely the shifting to a more sustainable business model.
