Abstract
Since the invention of the combustion engine, thermal management was the most important task to ensure the operating performance of materials and to protect them from the high amount of heat produced by the thermal unit, hardly cooled down by air due to the low speed (or even no speed) of the early engine applications. Moving parts were realized lighter, to downsize the huge dimensions and to solve the problem of the low engine rotating speed, but then the engineers at the time had to face the problems of overheating and knocking, which caused continuous failures. Nowadays the problem of heat dissipation is still a crucial question due to several challenges which are coming from the development of the technologies of the vehicles. The aim of the thesis is to compare different approach of estimating the heat transfer from the exhaust gas into the exhaust system using CFD simulations. The thermal simulations will be performed with the PowerTHERM and GT-Power software suites, moreover each of these simulations will be coupled with the simulation of the external flow field, in order to calculate the heat flow from the exhaust gas to the surrounding media. Finally there will be an evaluation of the models based on the relevant criteria, as accuracy of the results, effort spent building the model and set up preparation.
