Abstract
The dissertation focuses on an economic analysis, the SWOT analysis (“Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats”).
The SWOT analysis in this work has been applied to the study of the inner areas of Sicily, namely Madonie, Nebrodi, Simeto-Etna, Terre Sicane and Calatino areas.
These areas have been selected by the SNAI ( the Italian National Strategy for Internal Areas) as areas that need to be improved from different points of view in order to assure their long-term economic development. In addition, to a comprehensive analysis of the peculiarities, typical products and economic activities of the Sicilian inner areas, a comparison between the five Sicilian inner areas and the other rural areas in Tuscany (namely the Region of Chianti Senese and the Region of Chianti Fiorentino) is carried out. Although the latter are not involved by the SNAI strategy. The decision to compare these areas was made on the basis of the similarities of the two groups of territories that lead to an appropriate comparison both at the geographical level given the affinity and the territorial similarity, and at the level of various kinds of products such as wine and oil , local products and so on. In addition, a comparison index is also shown in the relationship that the two Regions have with their territory and the use they make of it. It emerges that Sicily could achieve a degree of added value as high as the one of Tuscany, if the Sicilian territory was valued more. In particular, the wine production of the Chianti region (worldwide known Brand) is highlighted, in comparison with the Sicilian wine production which branches off mainly in more coastal areas. The latter turns out to be another element of comparison because even in the inner areas of Sicily the production of wine could be increased by exploiting the territory of inner areas in a better way. The thesis highlights both the positive and negative aspects of the Sicilian and Tuscan areas, recognizing however that the internal areas of the Chianti Region can be considered a model to follow or to imitate in order to improve the situation in Sicily. The SWOT analysis performed entirely in Desktop mode with a research work through the websites, municipal sites, through the consultation of texts purely dedicated to the Sicily Region and even through some videos available on the web.
