Riassunto analitico
La tesi descrive la relazione tra Twitter e il linguaggio della politica. Con l’avvento della tecnologia e della Comunicazione Mediata dal Computer, il linguaggio ha subito molteplici cambiamenti, al fine di adattarsi al linguaggio dei social media emergenti. Twitter è un social media creato nel 2006 e caratterizzato da uno stile unico e innovativo. La piattaforma deve la sua notorietà alla possibilità di condividere messaggi brevi e istantanei: infatti, in principio la lunghezza di un tweet era limitata a 140 caratteri, successivamente raddoppiati ed estesi a 280. Twitter ha raggiunto l’apice della sua popolarità negli ultimi anni ed ha trovato ampio utilizzo persino in ambito politico: i politici se ne avvalgono per comunicare con i loro follower, ma anche per condurre le loro campagne elettorali. La tesi riflette su alcune delle caratteristiche principali di Twitter e sugli strumenti di cui si servono i politici per condividere i loro messaggi. La tesi analizza il linguaggio politico usato dal Presidente degli Stati Uniti Donald Trump, dal Primo Ministro Britannico Boris Johnson e dall’attuale Leader della Lega, nonché ex Vice Presidente del Consiglio ed ex Ministro dell’Interno Matteo Salvini. La tesi esamina il linguaggio dei suddetti politici su Twitter con lo scopo di identificare le strategie linguistiche maggiormente sfruttate all’interno dei loro tweet. I risultati ottenuti evidenziano le analogie e le differenze presenti nel linguaggio dei tre politici, ed anche le strategie e il lessico utilizzato al fine di riuscire a catturare l’attenzione dei lettori.

Abstract
This thesis describes the relationship between Twitter and the language of politics. With the advent of technology and Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), language has undergone through several changes in order to be adapted to the emerging Social Network System (SNS). Twitter is a social media created in 2006 and characterized by unique and innovative features. The platform is known for its immediacy and briefness: a Twitter post was limited to 140 characters, only recently extended to 280. Twitter has gained popularity in the last few years and it started to be widely used by politicians to communicate with their followers or to run their political campaign. The thesis focuses on a number of linguistic features of Twitter and on the tools used by politicians to share their messages. The study mainly focuses on the political language used by: the U.S. President Donald Trump, the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the former Italian Minister of the Interior, Matteo Salvini. The thesis analyses the presence of the abovementioned politicians on Twitter and aims at identifying the linguistic strategies used in their tweets. The results highlight both differences and analogies between the politicians, the strategies and the lexis used to catch the attention of the audience.
