In questo elaborato è mia intenzione analizzare più da vicino la tematica “traduzione e revisione di brevetti”, in quanto ho svolto il mio tirocinio presso l’agenzia di traduzione NSC Srl.
The main goal of this thesis is to analyze in detail the topic “patent translation and review”, having done my traineeship at the translation agency NSC Srl. In the first chapter I will deal with the laws, such as the European Patent Convention of 1973, which regulate the filing of the patent and its protection against plagiarism and unauthorized use of this. When the inventor decides to file a patent, he also chooses the countries where to file it to, then the law of that country will apply. It will be referred to the Italian law because all patents I translated and reviewed during my traineeship are regulated by the Italian law. I will then analyze the chemical patent which is analyzed in chapter III. Such patent is complex under two aspects which can be summarized in two questions: what is filed as patent? And, considering that a single formula may give several compounds, what is considered to be part of the invention? The chapter ends with two examples, the first one of plagiarism and the second one of patent authorization. The first one is the “Ford-case”. Ford used wipers without authorization from the inventor. The latter example deals with the access to the patent of the medicine against hepatitis C. This arises a debate on giving free access to those kinds of life-saving patents. The second chapter is the core of the thesis since it deals with the translation and the review. The first part deals with the translation and its aspects, which are typical for the patent, and the machine translation. As example of translation tool, I will analyze SDL Trados, which I used during my traineeship and the software “Patent Translate”. The second part deals with the review. The third chapter is based on the review of a chemical patent. This patent has been reviewed by me during my traineeship and the chapter is based on the comparison between the translation and the review, including a comment on it. Every correction is marked in red and those which are marked in yellow refer to the “note”. The chapter ends with a comment to the “note” and an explanation of how to translate figures. The thesis ends with the last chapter dealing with the translation of patents in other languages such as English and Spanish, with their aspects and peculiarities, and an example of a patent translated in German and Spanish using “Patent Translate”.
