Abstract
In the last decades a lot of scientific efforts have been focused on the study of organic semiconductors in view of their peculiar mechanical, electronic, and optical properties.
For instance, semiconducting polymers, already present in the every day life through their use in organic solar cells, light emitting diodes, and field effect transistors,
represents an important share within the above class of materials.
Among them, one of the most studied system is poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), showing relatively high mobility and optical properties suitable for optoelectronic devices.
Open questions regarding P3HT (and polymers in general) are related to its structural organization (also specifically connected to the polymorphic nature of its polymer family), and to the link between morphology and optoelectronic properties.
This report aims at analyzing the crystal structure of P3HT via a first principles computational approach based on density functional theory, as implemented in the
Quantum ESPRESSO package.
Because of the dominant role played in such systems by the long-range (van der Waals) interactions, besides standard (LDA and GGA's) exchange-correlation approximations, we have also considered several dispersion corrections (namely DFT-D, vdW-DF2, rVV10) in order to describe accurately the P3HT ctystals.
We have studied different crystal structures, determining their relative stability and the resulting electronic properties.
Structural properties have been compared across the different functionals considered and with experiments, providing indications about the relative accuracy of the computational approaches.
P3HT crystals have been characterized starting from their pristine building blocks (isolated chains of polythiophene and P3HT) up to few experimentally
derived forms.
An ad-hoc analysis tool have been developed, as part of this thesis work, to analyze the structural differences of the studied systems and, if possible, to correlate them with the electronic properties.
In perspective, these benchmark data, together with the structural analysis tool described above and the knowledge gathered about the parameter space of P3HT crystals, could open the way for a larger scale study focused on random search and structure prediction of polymer crystal phases.
