Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the chemical-physical and mechanical characteristics of a shaft with a keyway location and to evaluate a possible application of a different raw material than the one currently in use, due to the cost associated with heat treatments and the difficulty in getting it in this historical period.
For this purpose, in addition to the finished product, the starting raw material was analyzed, investigating the relevant properties of two newly delivered bars characterized by a different state of supply: one consisting of steel in its raw state and the other heat-treated with hot rolling and normalization.
The material is a C45 steel, belonging to the family of unalloyed quenched and tempered steels.
Concerning the shaft, only the type of steel involved is disclosed. Therefore, in order to find the presence of any heat treatment, it is also necessary to analyze the raw material.
The following tests were performed on the materials received, in order: chemical analysis, hardness test, microstructural investigation by optical microscopy and tensile test.
Chemical analysis was realized using optical emission spectroscopy, which was able to confirm the type of steel used and declared by the supplier.
Then, the microstructure of the material was analyzed to check the distribution of the characteristic phases (ferrite and pearlite), the average grain size and the homogeneity of the microstructure, whereas the mechanical properties were determined through a Brinell hardness test and a tensile test.
The uniformity of the microstructure, together with microscopic analysis, can also be analyzed with the hardness test. Therefore, indentations were made at different positions on the raw material and on the final product. Due to the type of raw material used, it was expected that the results would be uniform at each location on the material because, despite the presence of heat treatment, there isn’t the formation of new phases with different mechanical properties. However, the values obtained were uniform on the finished product, while on the raw material they are more variable. Analysis of the microstructure permitted investigation of the reason behind the anomalies: in fact, micrographs show the prevalence of pearlitic grain over the ferritic one, whose mechanical properties are better and therefore may result in higher hardness values.
With the tensile test, mechanical properties were checked both in the raw material and on the final product. In particular, in the first one, specimens were taken at the outer edge and center section, while for the second one, a single specimen was analyzed. From the values obtained, it is necessary to know the yield strength of the material in order to verify, in relation to the applied load, the beginning of plastic deformation. This parameter is very important because, when in operation, it would be better not to reach the yield condition, which would cause a malfunctioning of the part and a shorter service life.
The results obtained on both the raw material and the finished product could establish that, at present, the keyway shaft is hot-rolled and normalized. For its production, it cannot be considered possible to use raw steel as a substitute of the treated steel because of the microstructural characteristics and also the mechanical properties are not suitable for the considered application.
