Abstract
In this contribution, I introduce a prototype of a decision support system (DSS) based on Expected Utility Theory and the Bayesian inference, and I illustrate some applications in order to understand the influence of the parameters on the decision-maker’s action.
I will present the implementation of a ration approach, the Expected Utility Theory (EUT) in those civil engineering decision problems in which decision makers have to act based on the output of Structural Health Monitoring.
Starting from data acquired through a monitoring system and following Bayesian inference, it is necessary to identify the state of the structure, in probabilistic terms.
Once the correlation between the deformation state and the structure health status has been defined, an analytical framework has been implemented, EUT, in order to define the greatest usefulness of each action concerning the possible approach to the structure, corresponding to the action that foresees the minor financial loss, thus from the economic standpoint.
In these applications, I showed what happens by varying the parameters (for example the prior probability), which heavily influence the decision-maker’s choice.
It was also analysed how the results vary when it’s possible to clear the temperature effect and when the intended use of the structure is changed, and, consequently, by acting on costs.
