Abstract
This dissertation aims to offer – from the perspective of a university student – a view of contemporary society through that music that not so long ago was considered ‘high’ and elitist. However, this musical genre is suitable for a public of all ages and social ranks, as it carries universal and timeless values, and this is the point I have chosen to be the focus of my dissertation. A path that goes from the origins (around the XVI and XVII centuries) to the present days, giving also space to the admirable System of José Antonio Abreu in Venezuela, considers also how the communication media (in Italy and in Spain) have dealt with the divulgation of the classical music genre. Besides, a great attention has been given to how infants, children and adolescents have been exposed to the genre and grown an interest in it afterwards. My analysis has shown that our society is still a long way from a widespread divulgation of the classical music to the younger generations.
