Negli ultimi anni, l'industria automotive ha posto sempre maggiore attenzione nel trasformare il veicolo da semplice mezzo di trasporto passivo a sistema complesso ad elevato contenuto tecnologico, in grado di monitorare lo stato di funzionamento del mezzo e intervenire in situazioni di emergenza, al fine di aumentare la sicurezza stradale.
In the last years the automotive industry focused on the vehicle transition from a passive means of transport to a complex and highly technological system. The goal is a system able to keep under control the dynamic behavior of the vehicle and to take actions in dangerous conditions. The Cyber™ Tyre project by Pirelli spa aims to sensorize and monitor the tire, thanks to the measures coming from accelerometric sensors located inside the tire. Among the extracted features, the patch area and patch length are of great interest for sports vehicles, in order to reach the maximum performance. The aim of this thesis was the evaluation of Key Performance Indicators for the tire footprint area, in terms of consistency and comparability with the data from the Cyber™ Tyre system. Firstly, the activity focused on the estimation of the accuracy and the precision of the Cyber™ Tyre system about the footprint characterization: indeed a testing session has been planned, executed and analyzed. Thanks to it, the precision of the system was evaluated and related to some sources of uncertainty. Secondly, for three tires the static footprints have been acquired. This analysis highlighted the variability of the patch phenomena, especially due to the tread pattern. Moreover, the investigation on the state-of-art methodology pointed out some critical issues: for this reason, a new approach was defined. This new procedure consists in the extraction of new KPIs comparable with the Cyber™ Tyre data. Eventually, outdoor tests were carried out for the acquisition of dynamic footprints. This data was analyzed and compared to the Cyber™ Tyre measures, taking into account the variability of the dynamic conditions, and the forces measured by the dynamometric hubs.
