Abstract
This project is aimed at studying a practical application of a highly innovative approach to financial modeling.
The approach to be applied is the one proposed by Carlo Alberto Magni in his Investment Decisions and the Logic of Valuation. Linking Finance, Accounting, and Engineering, which describes an accounting and financial engineering system and a calculation tool: the Split-Screen Matrix.
To use the same words of the author Magni, it is
an innovative method to understand, visualize, use the complex network of accounting quantities and their static and dynamic relationships. The approach is based on the following "toolbox":
a) 3 concepts (capital, income, cash flow)
b) 2 laws (motion law, conservation law)
c) 1 matrix (Split Screen Matrix).
This "3x2x1" system creates a simple and intuitive, manageable structure that "engineers" the accounting relationships by creating a logical machine that connects and integrates the Balance Sheet, the Income Statement, the Cash Flow Statement. The Split Screen Matrix promotes direct understanding of accounting and financial reports, the extraction of accounting information, facilitates the economic and financial analysis of a company or an investment project. This tool also makes it possible to incorporate principles and notions of finance and thus to embrace accounting and finance under the same "logical machine". The approach has a significant pedagogical value as it allows you to learn complex concepts, principles, accounting and financial models in a short time, minimizing cognitive effort.
The goal is to design and implement an operating model that collects all the budget data of a company and identifies the mathematical relationships between them and the output data. The budget data will constitute the operational and financial variables. The output will consist of the forecast company balance sheet (Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Cash Flow Statement).
The Model must allow at least to:
• evaluate the consequences of the economic and investment choices of businesses;
• estimate the future performance of businesses and the wealth produced, in relation to business choices;
• evaluate the financing policies of companies;
• represent the output of different scenarios where the inputs are the result of estimates or forecasts, allowing you to simulate the results when different contexts arise;
• represent the output of different scenarios where the inputs are decision-making, allowing you to simulate the results obtained by implementing different company policies.
Some result indicators for evaluation will also be studied. Since the mandate of company management is to increase shareholder wealth, the main parameter of reference may be an indicator related to equity, but we will also try to identify other parameters (qualitative and quantitative) related to the 'good functioning' of the company, understood as the solidity, growth, satisfaction of all stakeholders.
The main tools that will be applied will be the accounting and financial engineering system and the Split-Screen Matrix. The practical implementation of these tools will be carried out on a spreadsheet, preferably Microsoft Excel®.
The Model to be implemented will find its first practical application in the “GRAFGroup Analytic Budgeting” project, promoted by the companies belonging to the GRAF group.
With the “GRAFGroup Analytic Budgeting” project, the companies belonging to the GRAF group intend to develop and structure a budgeting system based on strategic assumptions: all future revenues, costs and assets must be estimated. We intend to build the mathematical model that allows to evaluate the results of the hypotheses used as input.
