Abstract
This work analyses the construction processes of gender as a social structure through an applied research involving both qualitative and quantitative methods. The research was conducted on eight groups of students in two Italian high-schools, triggering discussions based on the use of cinema as a narrative stimulus.
This work focuses on the communication processes developing in interactions and on emerging gender narratives. Observation reveals how promoting dialogue and participation can modify gender narration and the participants agency.
The work develops through eight chapters.
The first and second chapters take into account historical events, theories and social aspects connected to gender.
In chapter three, theories and concepts about narrative are analyzed, in connection to the present research. Chapter three also presents the meaning of facilitation as a communication system promoting participation and fostering alternative narratives. Eventually, chapter three discusses how some aspects of Conversation Analysis can be used to understand how the gender system is constructed throughout the interactions.
Chapter four describes the research instruments and the reasons for their specific choice. The empirical nature of the research conveys the use of multiple different tools. Cinema is employed as a narrative stimulus and video-recording is used for the recording of group interactions. Before each discussion session, the participants were asked to answer to a few questions. They were also asked to fill in a questionnaire before and after the focus group. The recordings of the interactions were transcribed for detailed analysis.
The notion of focus group is also explored in connection to the dialogic facilitation method. Lastly, chapter four provides information about the activities, the participants and about how data were collected.
Chapter five, six and seven are dedicated to the treatment and analysis of collected data.
Chapter five is about the open-answer questions assigned to students after the film showing. A selection of the most frequent ideas is made. Eccentric thoughts are also considered. Chapter six contains a selection of samples from the transcriptions of interactions showing the mechanisms of facilitation and which kind of alternative narratives are produced.
Chapter seven analyses data from the questionnaires. A comparison is made between answers given before and after the focus group activities. Data are also compared to ideas emerged from qualitative data sets.
Chapter eight proposes a general interpretation of data and a comprehensive assessment about tools and methods.
The multidimensional analysis reveals that the gender structure is complex and it is dynamically built into the communication process. Participants produce and negotiate multiple and crossing gender systems. Data show that some aspects of the gender structure are very stable, but irregularities and inconsistencies are also present.
Facilitation actions enhance diversity as an opportunity to test the contradictions in prevailing models.
The research confirms the need for a new theoretical approach analysing gender as a plural structure composed by multiple dimensions, some more static, other more precarious and open to negotiation. The analysis suggests that gender relationships are inherently complex and that facilitation based on narrative can promote alternative perspectives: data show the multiplicity of gender structures in the communication.
The research allowed to study and describe how gender is negotiated using multiple narratives. Also, the activities suggested that using narrative stimuli and promoting dialogic communication give access to new results, connecting narrative contents to their production in interaction. Lastly, the use of a wide range of tools demonstrates the importance of making the participants active agents in the social processes they inhabit.
