The scope of this study was to model and simulate the 1-dimensional flow (in a 2-dimensional structure) of gas around piston ring pack in several full cycles of an internal combustion engine and the resulting forces acting on the components (piston ring). A numerical model was developed and implemented in Matlab/GNU Octave in order to simulate the gas flow from the combustion chamber toward the crank case (and vice versa) along the axial, radial and circumferential direction. Subsequently the motion of the ring inside the groove was also considered, given the fact that the component’s position inside the groove drastically affects the flow characteristics of the gas during the cycle. Thus a ring motion model was implemented in a retroactive manner to take into account for this type of motion.
