Riassunto analitico
La tesi si propone di analizzare le diverse percezioni, opinioni e preferenze degli studenti italiani della scuola privata di inglese Wall Street English di Carpi, Modena riguardo alle due varietà più comuni della lingua inglese: l’inglese britannico e americano. Per fare ciò, è necessario innanzitutto esaminare la storia della lingua inglese e della sua formazione in Inghilterra e in America, offrendo così una visione generale del panorama storico e socioculturale legato a ciascuna varietà. Nello specifico, i principali fattori che hanno influenzato la lingua inglese in Inghilterra e in America verranno analizzati, esplorando le motivazioni che hanno portato alla formazione delle due diverse identità linguistiche. Inoltre, le principali differenze riguardanti l’ortografia e la grammatica delle due varietà verranno esaminate, citando i principali dizionari e grammatiche pubblicati in entrambi i paesi. In seguito, verranno presentati cinque studi svolti in Europa e nel mondo, per ricercare possibili tendenze, preferenze e percezioni comuni. In particolare, tre dei cinque studi sono rivolti a studenti – austriaci, spagnoli e italiani – e i due studi rimanenti ad insegnanti – in Europa nel primo studio e non madrelingua nel mondo nel secondo –. Successivamente, la ricerca all’interno della scuola privata italiana verrà presentata con l’obiettivo di identificare ulteriori risultati e confermare o negare quelli trovati nei precedenti studi. Per prima cosa, verranno analizzati i risultati di un sondaggio online rivolto agli studenti italiani della scuola, sia in maniera generale sia in maniera più approfondita confrontando il livello di inglese e l’età; in seguito, verranno esaminate le interviste a tutti gli insegnanti; infine, verranno analizzate le risposte ad una ulteriore domanda rivolta soltanto agli insegnanti italiani di inglese, permettendo così di verificare se le percezioni degli studenti, nonostante i diversi livelli di inglese e le età, siano allineate con le percezioni degli insegnanti italiani.

Abstract
This dissertation aims to analyze the different perceptions, opinions, and preferences of Italian students at the private language school Wall Street English in Carpi, Modena, regarding the two most common varieties of the English language: British English and American English. In order to do this, it is essential to first examine the history and development of the language in both England and America, providing an overview of the historical and socio-cultural panorama of each variety. Specifically, the main factors that influenced the English language in England and America will be analyzed, exploring the motivations that led to the formation of the two distinct linguistic identities. Furthermore, the main differences concerning orthography and grammar will be discussed, mentioning the first dictionaries and grammars published in both countries. Following this, five key studies carried out in Europe and around the world will be presented with the intent to identify possible trends in preferences and perceptions. Specifically, the first three key studies focus on students – Austrian, Spanish, and Italian – and the last two focus on teachers, with the first study analyzing teachers in Europe and the second examining non-native English teachers worldwide. Subsequently, the private English school research will be presented, with the aim of identifying further results and either confirm or deny the findings emerged in the previous studies. First, the findings of an online student survey addressed to the Italian students attending the school will be analyzed, both generally and more in detail comparing them with proficiency level and age. Next, the teacher interviews will be examined. Finally, the responses to an additional question asked to the Italian teachers only will be discussed, allowing to determine whether the students’ perceptions – despite the different proficiency levels and ages – align with the Italian teachers’ ones.
