Abstract
The aim of this work is to show the implementation, calibration and on track validation of an advanced torque control which has the distinction of not having any explicit reference to torque values in his control logic structure. It is based on the control of the inlet pressure through an appropriate management performed by the drive-by-wire throttle body. The engine object of the implementation is the Abarth 414-F4: 4 cylinders, 4 stroke, turbocharged race engine homologated by the Fedaration Internationale de l’Automobile to equip the second generation of single-seaters that are going to compete in the FIA Formula 4 Championships. In addition are also presented the calibration activities aimed at the development of the control strategy object of this work for the ATM-AR F3R racing engine. All the activities that led to the drafting of this thesis were carried out in the Engine Testing Department of Autotecnica Motori, headquartered in Casalmaggiore (CR), supervised by the engineer Alberto Longhini, F4 engines project leader.
This document has been organized in chapters: at first it is proposed a descriptive overview of the company, of the application context of this project, of the reasons that led to its realization and of the technical definition of the engines of which the calibrations were carried out. In the subsequent sections we proceed with the description of the operative part of the project starting from the analysis of the engine test cell and then proceeding with a detailed explanation of the control logic of the pressure control and its implementation looking at every calibration involved and their tuning. In chapter 5 is proposed a brief illustration of the indicating analysis performed during experimental activities aimed to the definition of the optimal spark advance compatible with the engine knock limits and to the search of correlation between the knock sensor and the instrumented spark plug, useful to the definition of the knock control strategy.
In the last chapter are reported all the actives carried out during on track test session aimed to the definition of the calibration and to the validation of the “torque control” for both the Abarth 414-F4 and the ATM-AR F3R.
