Riassunto analitico
This thesis is about a factory cost reduction project that has been conducted at Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A., with reference to the continuous improvement processes. The purpose of the solutions, that have been implemented as a consequence of this study, is to reduce the productive cycles’ cost levels, with the aim of a competitiveness increase in an increasingly complex market. The objective is to re-think company aspects in order to identify and reduce to a minimum the low value-added activities, to eliminate waste, to optimize internal processes and to satisfy customers’ expectations. In the opening chapter, there is an overview of the methods that can be adopted by the companies to face the factory cost reduction challenge and stay competitive on the market. This is followed by the introduction of the Automobili Lamborghini case study. Then, a contextualization of the company is done by describing its history, analyzing main phases and management changes which have characterized it. The company’s actual product offer and its targeted customers are studied with a particular attention to the market segment in which Automobili Lamborghini works. Moreover, it is provided an overview of the evolution of the sales and volumes during last years. After, Quality is defined, described and analyzed in its facets underlining its central role in guaranteeing the high product standards that make a Lamborghini a benchmark for the market players. Moreover, it is clarified the role of Audit as continuous improvement instrument for those models already in production phase, briefly introducing the method for analyzing and monitoring continuous improvement methodologies, based on defects modules. The description of the company layout and production phases concludes the chapter dedicated to the presentation of the Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. reality. The essay continues with the early phases of the project, that has started in sequence to an inspection of the bottlenecks and wastes along the whole production line, carried out with the support of consulting groups. Therefore, the description of the project begins with an analysis of the initial situation in which the company lied, with a detailed mapping of the process of interest, a layout overview of the involved area and a list of all the criticalities emerged from the activity, that have pushed towards new work distribution, standardization of the labor and layout changes. The study of these aspects characterizes the core of the thesis, that brings to evidence even practical examples extracted from the daily problem-solving debate. At the end, there is the presentation of the results, obtained after the implementation of the project solutions, through the evidence of the meaningful KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) compared with their starting values. To conclude, there is a final paragraph mentioning the possible future evolutions that may involve even the processes of other models of the product range, with the aim of ensuring the continuous improvement of internal processes.
