Abstract
In the transport sector, many steps forward have been made over the past 25 years to try to stem and contain the problem of air pollution , developing new technologies over time and implementing, where possible, existing ones. The final objective of the studies in this sector is to achieve emissions of the main polluting factors known produced by the vehicles every year on a large scale all over the world to be practically nil. Measurements of these emissions are, however, still subject to study today, as they are very difficult to carry out correctly and with absolute precision given the complex nature of these chemical elements and the presence of a truly considerable quantity of parameters that influence the measurements of these values.Every day entities predisposed to the study and containment of these harmful polluting elements, place their attentions and their research on the study of the phenomenon in order to obtain the best method and the most appropriate process to better understand how to truly estimate the quantities produced in so as to guarantee an effective decrease with ad hoc devices and to set adequate limits to the technologies actually exists in the world of vehicle production. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to understand the phenomenon of emissions and how these are currently measured in the real case of a very important manufacturing company in the Chinese market and to understand the problem thoroughly by paying particular attention first to what currently exists in terms of tests legally recognized and execution methods and then subsequently studied the differences between measurements on engines made in laboratory and two different real driving emissions cycles ( NEDC and WLTC cycles) carried out on two different vehicles.Final step was to create a mathematical model capable of predicting the emissions produced by the vehicle during a real cycle, based on the emissions measured on the engines and then comparing the data thus obtained with those measured during the actual tests on the vehicles. In addition, this study also allowed us to focus attention on the actual link between emissions and two of the many parameters that cause them, namely engine speed and torque, so as to verify that the latter (and in particular their variation in limited time intervals) are actually fundamental and inextricably linked to the problem of emissions. This link also lays the foundations for the study of subsequent more performing engines in terms of pollution reduction identifying the parameters to be kept under effective control.
