Abstract
Composite materials are generally used in the automotive industry for the production of chassis, bodies, interiors and other components.
As early as the 1980s, parts of Formula 1 single-seaters were made of composite materials because of the achievable advantages such as high stiffness, strength, and lightness. Today we find the same advantages in normal road use, which has seen the assembly of these innovative lighter and stronger parts on production cars.
An example, is the company Bucci Composites that being active in the sector can boast of having designed and manufactured an aftermarket wheel rim entirely in carbon fiber aimed at road use. Precisely in this regard, it is pointed out that the aftermarket is a condition subsequent to the purchase of the vehicle and therefore not covered by the first type approval regulation 858/2018 used for production vehicles. In fact, the aftermarket does not currently have a regulation that includes the composite material and thus legally allows the use of the carbon fiber rim on the road.
Therefore, following UNECE Regulation No. 124 as the reference standard and noting the limitations on composite materials, the thesis work was to develop a dedicated test plan for the purpose of type approval. Static and dynamic tests were conducted to certify the functionality but more importantly ensure the safety requirements of the composite rim, according to the test protocol. The positive outcome was documented and submitted to the judgment of the UNECE Commission, which as the type-approval authority, finally granted the approval.
