The present work of thesis, realized in collaboration with Ferrari S.p.a., describes the progressive steps followed to create an accurate battery pack model for a high performance hybrid electric vehicle. This task is extremely crucial for all vehicles with high voltage battery, especially for high performance applications where it is necessary to accurately understand the battery limit exploiting all the power and energy available without compromising battery integrity. Due to the sensitivity of data, the cell and battery characteristics value are tinted, but the cell behaviour and considerations followed during the work are reported. The starting point is the characterization of the cell chosen for the application, by means of typical test like capacity and HPPC tests, but also aging and track profiles tests. Then, according to the cell behaviour a proper model has been developed and a Matlab tool, which can be used also for other battery types, has been created to guide the choice of the battery architecture.
