Riassunto analitico
This thesis focuses on the resilience of the entrepreneur and his business to natural disasters. The study specifically examined small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the northern area of the province of Modena, with the aim of investigating their resilience - in terms of dynamic capacity - to two critical events with different impacts: the 2012 earthquake and the Covid-19 pandemic. A questionnaire was administered to managers of public establishments and retail shops in five municipalities - Ravarino, Finale Emilia, Mirandola, Carpi and San Felice sul Panaro - to facilitate a quantitative analysis. Given the focus on small and micro enterprises, where the entrepreneur plays a fundamental role and a mixture of organisation and entrepreneur is created, entrepreneurial resilience and the role of social capital were also examined. In the second chapter, the concept of natural disasters and their classification was defined. The second chapter begins by defining the concept of natural disasters and their classification. Furthermore, the emphasis was placed on the management of natural disasters, the importance of technology and the role of public policies in disaster prevention and post-disaster recovery. Moreover, the third chapter describes the role of dynamic capabilities in business management and the link with the concept of resilience in business. The thesis presents the objectives, methodology, and main results of the analysis on a sample of small and medium-sized enterprises to which structured questionnaires were administered. The paper concludes with summary considerations that highlight the managerial and policy implications of the research.
