Abstract
More and more often, companies in the motorcycle world are required to design and produce new vehicles that maintain high performance while reducing pollution related to their construction and functionality.
Faced with this demand, they must strive to research, find, and test new materials and new technologies that can make their products attractive and innovative compared to the competitors.
The following feasibility study identifies the method adopted to validate the applicability of a new material to a specific component, used on a DUCATI motorcycle. The experience initially started with the aim of modifying the production of aesthetic elements on the bike, has led to a result completely different from what was expected.
The analysis focused on the characterization of polyamides loaded with long fibrous glass reinforcement.
In particular, the impact linked to the adoption of a polyarylamide (PARA) and a polyphthalamide (PPA) on the production of an engine head cover, previously made of aluminum, is compared.
Following an introductory phase of the study, the main properties of the material to be adopted were selected, among the various proposals of the company itself and by the collaborating companies, as the component on which to test its use. By adopting the MOLDEX3D process simulation software, the mold filling flow, the reinforcement arrangement, and the variation of the mechanical properties compared to the starting characteristics were studied.
Finally, by setting the data returned by MOLDEX3D as machine parameters, sampling tests were carried out, of which aesthetic and numerical results are reported.
The components produced as samples were subsequently tested by reference to standardized laboratory tests, such as dimensional survey, calcination, tomography, DSC analysis, and study of the viscosity index with reduction of the reinforcement length.
For both the replacement materials mentioned, the results are noteworthy and satisfactory, both aesthetically and mechanically, to the point of considering possible the effective adoption of the same for the next series of vehicles.
Future tests could be aimed at verifying more exhaustively the real performance of the component obtained at the end of this experience, adopting bench tests and experimental tests to simulate the real conditions of use. Moreover, it could be verified how the adopted method can be replicated on components of different natures and motor vehicle use.
