Abstract
During my master thesis I investigated the magnetotransport properties of graphene. In the initial part of the research, I focused on the production of hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN)/graphene/hBN Van der Waals heterostructures. I started from the exfoliation of the pristine materials, characterizing them using optical contrast and Raman spectroscopy. Subsequently, I stacked the different layers on top of each other using a double stage microscope in a "clean room" environment and I analyzed their quality through AFM measurements. Exploiting a dedicated software, I designed the devices that have been investigated in high magnetic field. In addition, I characterized a similar heterostructure (hBN/Bilayer Graphene/hBN), supplied from the laboratory, in a superconducting magnet and at low temperatures, using gate voltage and temperature dependence. I used the gate dependence to study the filling and emptying of the Landau Levels (LLs) as a function of different intensities of the magnetic field, for the longitudinal and Hall configuration. We observed a complete resolution of the degeneracies around 7T, signature of a high quality sample. Exploiting the temperature dependence at different value of the magnetic field, I extrapolated the activation energy of filling factor v=-2, -1, 1, 2, and their dependence on the magnetic field, demonstrating that higher v are more robust in presence of perpendicular field. Through the additional analysis of the sample in tilted magnetic field I derived a complete labeling of the filling factor in the LLL. Subsequently, I focused on the study of the filling factor v=0, investigating its evolution under the application of tilted magnetic field, in the framework of the Quantum Hall Ferromagnetism theory. In order to do it, I compared the acquisitions of the longitudinal and non local measurements, searching for the presence of helical edge channel, as predicted from the theory. Finally I observed the presence of a possible phase transition between different electronic ordering states at filling factor v=1 and v=2, discriminating the inversion of the polarity of the perpendicular electric field acting on the bilayer graphene sample. Simultaneously, I characterized CVD graphene samples produced by an external company, using magnetic field and low temperatures for the electronic properties and using Raman spectroscopy for the crystal structure.
