Riassunto analitico
This study investigates the determinants of a novel crime index for the European countries. This newly constructed crime index is obtained using a dimensional reduction statistical technique, that is principal component analysis, considering data regarding burglary, international homicides, robbery, theft of vehicle and drugs. Consequently, the determinants of this crime index are investigated in the multiple linear regression framework among the most cited in the literature such as GDP per capita, GDP growth, Gini index, unemployment, education, religion, rule of law and urbanization. Results confirm that an increase in the GDP per capita lead in a decrease of the synthetic crime index. In addition, an increase of inequality, city size and alcohol consumption have a positive impact on the risk of being victimized, while an increase of school enrolment have a contrary effect. Overall, almost all the determinants showed conclusions which are in line with the existing literature.
