Riassunto analitico
In our modern society the English language has acquired an all-pervasive function in many different sectors of the economy. From local governments to international organizations, from national enterprises to big multinational corporations: the English language has played and continues to play the role of “the language of communication”. The present thesis discusses the role of BELF (Business English as Lingua Franca) in the global context, with a focus on the importance of global communicative competences in international enterprises. As a matter of fact, this thesis presents and discusses some of the most relevant competences required for the global business communication. Furthermore, this work explores the close relation between Business English as Lingua Franca and the role of Translation. This thesis aims to investigate the consequences of the use of ELF on the translation choices, providing evidence of the implications of the use of English as Lingua Franca on the translation competences. In particular, this thesis stresses the importance of a linguistic, cultural and technical “adaptation” of the source text to a particular market, addressing an international audience and international organizations. In addition to the above-mentioned cross-linguistic analysis, this thesis pursues the objective to analyse the communication flows at Merlo, which is an Italian company that produces hydrostatic telehandlers. Particular attention is devoted to the language used by the Italian employees to communicate internally (with their foreign colleagues) and their communication with international customers. In conclusion, using the SWOT analysis, I will suggest the possible Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats which the Merlo Company could be confronted with by mastering a foreign language, (in this case English), effectively. The expected outcome is the elaboration of a strategy that can allow the Merlo Company to compete in the global market more effectively through the use of ad-hoc business communication strategies.
