Abstract
Nowadays thermosetting polymers and in particular epoxy resins, belonging to this large family, are having an increasingly wider demand for the most varied applications. These resins are widely used both as paints for protective coatings (an application which in the automotive, chemical and food sectors constitutes approximately 40% of the epoxy market) and in the adhesive and sealant industry but also in the industrial field. electrical and electronics. Among the main properties that make these polymers suitable for these purposes we can include the exceptional adhesion power on different supports such as metals, the excellent resistance to chemical and atmospheric agents, the high dielectric properties, the high mechanical resistance, the excellent dimensional stability with minimal shrinkage during hardening, the resistance to aging, the resistance to humidity and heat and the excellent film-forming properties, which make it the ideal material for the production of paints. [1]
This thesis work will focus in particular on the study and characterization of three types of epoxy resins supplied by Fibranet S.p.a and used in the shipbuilding sector, namely FB-RC01, FB-RC02 and FB-RC30/3.
The thesis is made up of six chapters: the first chapter presents the aims pursued by this thesis work; in the second, a general overview of thermosetting polymers is offered, paying particular attention to the glass transition temperature which is the central element of the thesis; the third chapter delves into epoxy resins, their applications and properties; in the fourth chapter we look at both the three resins analyzed and the characterization techniques used, i.e. Differential Scanning Calorimetry or DSC, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis or DMA, Thermomechanical Analysis or TMA and Thermogravimetric Analysis or TGA; in the fifth chapter the experimental results collected with the various tests carried out are discussed; finally the sixth and last chapter allows us to take a look at the conclusions drawn and possible future developments.
