Abstract
The trend in the development of vehicular mobility is clearly directed towards the automation of processes. This autonomous management will be made possible thanks to on-board systems of the vehicles, in communication with systems that manage the road infrastructure.
This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of blockchain technology, in particular of Hyperledger Fabric, in the field of managing a fundamental resource for the road infrastructure such as the road intersection, to coordinate the crossing vehicles, ensuring safety and traceability of operations.
From the scenario presented, which represents a four-way automated intersection, we have developed a smart contract for the booking operations of the crossing at the intersection and simulated its use through a simulation software.
The results showed that blockchain technology can be used to coordinate such a system, achieving similar performance in terms of throughput and accumulated delays to a centralized coordinator.
Future work may be carried out in the implementation of other coordination models through smart contracts.
