Abstract
In this MSc thesis, an experimental study on gears is developed in Vibration and Powertrain Laboratory of Department Engineering “Enzo Ferrari” of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
The goal of the work is to study the behavior of gears during meshing using a test rig of the laboratory: vibration and strain were correlated and pitting was shown.
The strains that occur during the meshing of gears, the relative vibrations at certain rotation speeds, torque and strains at low speed (quasi-static) were analyzed.
The modal analysis of the gear test rig was performed.
Eventually, the arising of pitting at specific resistant torque rotation frequency was studied.
The gears test bench and all different set-up developed to perform tests are shown.
All steps for each test are described: set-up of the test rig, instrumentation, execution of tests, data analysis and data discussion.
Through the execution of the experimental tests, it was possible to define the correlation between the strains and vibrations in the range of rotation speeds at constant torque, a comparison between the experimental evidence and the FEM analysis in the quasi-static field was carried out.
The modal analysis of the gear test bench was carried out in order to identify of its mode shapes and identify the resonances observed in the analysis of acceleration.
The evidence of pitting allows to determine the time of the occurrence for pitting itself and the behavior of gears during the formation of the phenomenon.
