Abstract
This thesis paper analyses the mechanical performance and corrosion resistance properties of two important steel alloys: the Duplex UNS S31803 and the Super Duplex UNS S32760. In the first chapters, we take an in-depth look at the microstructure of these alloys and how it varies with its permanence in different temperature ranges, as well as the effect of alloying elements and potentially damaging secondary phases present in these materials.
Next, we focus on the welding technique employed and the impacts it has on the microstructure of the material undergoing this process. Welding was performed using TIG technology, with filler gases such as Argon (completely pure) and a mixture of Argon and Nitrogen (2%). Some samples were subjected to solubilization heat treatment at 1120°C for one hour in a 6-bar Argon atmosphere.
With the aim of determining the best combination of filler gas and heat treatment that optimizes the quality of the weld joint according to the specific application, the samples were subjected to various tests, including tensile tests, corrosion tests in an electrolytic cell, and microhardness tests. In addition, they were prepared for optical micrographic analysis, allowing evaluation of the proportions between ferritic and austenitic phases.
The final considerations can be summarized as follows:
• The solution heat treatment (PWHT) carried out at 1120°C for 1 hour in a 6-bar Argon atmosphere provided two beneficial effects: first, it drastically improved the corrosion resistance, returning it almost to the initial value of the unwelded base material, in both steels analysed. Secondly, it increased the percent elongation of the two steels under investigation by about twice as much.
• The tensile tests showed that the tensile strength and yield strength values of the welded Duplex steel joints did not decrease from the values shown in the certificates of the base material (Appendix 1). In contrast, in the case of Super Duplex steels, the values decreased by about 200 MPa from those measured by the supplier.
• The percentage of average ferrite after welding is higher in Super Duplexes than in Duplexes, and this affects the mechanical and corrosion resistance properties of the joints.
• The measured values of microhardness do not vary among the three zones i.e., base material, HAZ and weld seam in any of the eight specimens tested.
• The mixture of Argon gas (98%) and Nitrogen (%) helps maintain the desired ratio of austenitic to ferritic phase of 50 percent in the case of Super Duplex steels. Despite this, no particular benefits were observed on the mechanical properties of the material. In contrast, in the case of average passivation currents (and consequently corrosion rate), the result was interesting in the case of Super Duplex steels, which practically halved the average passivation current.
• Both mechanical and corrosion resistance performances are lower in the case of Super Duplex steels than in the case of Duplex steels. In the case of the mechanical performance of the welded specimen could be due to the precipitation of deleterious secondary phases, which cannot be detected by the experimental technologies used in my thesis. The aspect that cannot be understood, based on the experimental methods applied here, is the reason for the higher average passivation current detected in the Super Duplex base material compared to the Duplex counterpart.
