Il progetto è stato condotto presso il FOCAS Research Institute (Technological University TU of Dublin), sotto la supervisione del Prof. H. J. Byrne, e si è basato su una collaborazione con il Prof. P. Cahill della Dublin City University (DCU). Ha compreso la coltura e la caratterizzazione di Cellule Staminali umane Pluripotenti indotte e dei i loro derivati neuroectodermici e mesodermici, i quali differenziano in Cellule Muscolari Lisce Vascolari. La microscopia confocale a scansione laser è stata utilizzata per l'analisi morfologica delle cellule; la spettroscopia infrarossa a trasformata di Fourier e la spettroscopia Raman sono state impiegate per dimostrare che i diversi tipi cellulari possono essere discriminati spettroscopicamente e che il meccanismo di differenziamento può essere monitorato in tempo reale.

Abstract
The project was carried out in FOCAS Research Institute (Technological University TU of Dublin), under the supervision of Prof. H. J. Byrne, and was based on a collaboration with Prof. P. Cahill of Dublin City University (DCU). It entailed culture and characterisation of human iPSC cells and their neuroectoderm and mesoderm derivates, that subsequently undergo myogenic differentiation to Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells. Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) was utilised for a morphological analyses of the cells; Fourier Transform Infrared absorption (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy were employed to demonstrate that the different cell types can be spectroscopically discriminated and that the differentiation mechanism can be monitored in real time.
