Abstract
An Emergency Department (ED) is a dynamic, unpredictable, and complex work environment characterized by various distinctive aspects, including a need for fast, efficient communication between the various figures present, and the highly collaborative nature of the work.
The literature includes in-depth studies of information systems supporting these departments, and has proposed various solutions.
The present thesis, continuing from a project initiated in November 2015 and completed in May 2016, studied the critical factors identified within the context of the ED of Reggio Emilia. These were deduced on the basis of a collection of detailed data from observations and interviews with the various professional figures active in the department. The collected data, regarding the information needs of the professionals and the reasons that render the existing information system inadequate to support the work of the operators, were studied in detail and through a series of steps and trials, always with the involvement of the future users, led to the design of a whiteboard and a dashboard which, together form a single integrated instrument capable of satisfying all the needs that emerged over the course of the research activities. The resulting interface produced by the design process has no parallel in the literature consulted and, to the author’s knowledge, at the state of art it is original.
The proposed system was favourably greeted by the ED operators and coordinating staff. Its features are able to satisfy all the information needs that emerged, thus rendering it suitable to effectively support the processes and work practices within the context object of the study.
