La dinamica di un'auto da corsa è governata dalla capacità degli pneumatici di generare il massimo grip. L'obiettivo di qualsiasi dinamico del veicolo è prevedere in modo accurato il comportamento dinamico degli pneumatici per governare le prestazioni dell'intero veicolo.
Dynamics of a race car is governed by the capability of the tyres to generate high grip forces. The aim of any vehicle dynamicist is to predict in an accurate manner the dynamic behaviour of the tyres to govern the performance of the whole vehicle. Together with Scuderia Alpha Tauri, the research has been focused on modelling and predicting the interaction between a tyre tread rubber and a rough road surface. Hysteretic contribution to grip has been investigated based on Persson’s model, in order to assess its sensitivity to ground roughness and viscoelastic properties of tread rubber compounds. In particular, for a given rough surface texture and a rubber compound, the aim is to predict the grip coefficient as a function of temperature and sliding speed. Due to strict limitation in testing on F1 racing tyres compounds, experimental validation of the model is challenging and only partially possible. However, some in-house experimental tests are performed, to investigate the different properties of a number of rubber compounds. Main validation of the current model is based on the comparison with available lit- erature references. Future research aims at implementing the presently described tyre grip model in more complex vehicle dynamics lap-time simulations and to be used as an impor- tant tool during the race weekend by the race team engineers, in order to assess the handling performance of the vehicles and guide set up variations for the sake of optimizing the available grip and balance in different conditions. Respecting a non-disclosure agreement, in order to protect all confidential infor- mation of Scuderia Alpha Tauri, all numerical data are omitted from the present work. To protect confidential data, axes are normalized and reference scales are omitted in all plots.
