Riassunto analitico
Over time there has been a shift from an industrial-based economy to a knowledge-based economy, which has led to the intensification of links between science, research, and production processes. Among the most effective ways to determine the spread of innovation and economic development, "academic spin-offs" play an important role. Academic spin-offs are companies linked to the academic context, due to the origin of the founders or the infrastructure system and relationships. However, great potential is associated with specific issues. On average, academic spin-offs do not develop as well as their non-academic counterparts. Often the founders do not have sufficient managerial and relational skills and there might be more difficulties in obtaining financial resources. This thesis investigates some of the factors that might limit or improve the performance of these new ventures. It examines the characteristics of the academic entrepreneur and the appropriate organizational structure. The focus is on the centrality of the team for the success of an academic spin-off, with particular reference to team heterogeneity and homogeneity. Italian spin-offs are characterized by a rather low growth rate, but by a high survival rate. The aim of this empirical research is to analyze the phenomenon in Italy and the variables of team composition that could lead to improved performance.
