Riassunto analitico
This thesis discusses labour platforms and Gig Economy in Europe by analysing the functioning and structure of labour platforms by considering both location-based (on-demand) platforms, such as food delivery, taxi, and domestic work, and web-based (or crowdwork) platforms, such as microtask, freelancing, professional services. First, the business models and production system of the labour platforms are analysed concerning the achievement of financial results; then, the role and functioning of the algorithm are explained as regards the job allocation system, the surveillance and performance evaluation system of the workers and the related negative repercussions on the work dimension, the environment and the physical and mental health of the gig workers. The thesis finally concentrates on analysing the correlation between youth unemployment, the increase of self-employment among young people in the sectors associated with digital labour platforms and the increase in digital activity and Internet use by young people.
