Abstract
The work reported in this thesis revolves around the development of an end-station dedicated to the realization of spin- and time-resolved photoemission measurements. This is the core system of the ULTRASPIN project, a collaboration between APE beamline research group of Istituto Officina dei Materiali (IOM-CNR), University of Rome III and with the partial support of an European contract (EXSTASY-EXperimental Station for the Analysis of the Spin dynamics, Grant agreement N.PIIF-GA-2012-326641) and related fellowship of a world-expert of Mott scattering, Prof. V. N. Petrov (Saint Petersburg State Polytechnical University). As an introductory discussion, the range of detectors and sources that can be used to realize such kinds of experiments is presented in order to justify the choices made in the design of ULTRASPIN apparatus.
On the technological side, the construction of the system of UHV chambers for hosting a four-axial Mott detector are described. The device was prepared for the transition from static to time-resolved mode, a task that required coping with several challenges: the detector has to run very efficiently and reliably for very long times, to start operation immediately after switch-on without complex preliminary operations, and to minimize the dead times between one measurement and the next. It was vital to achieve a detailed understanding of the apparatus and to bring it to operate in the described way before implementing time-resolved sources. Moreover the acquisition chain had to be modified to be maximally efficient in the shortly-pulsed regime.
On the scientific side, the realization of the first exploratory experiments useful for the take-off of the project are described. As a first experiment, growth and characterization of a system with high spin polarization and high stability in UHV conditions, i.e. Fe(001)-p(1x1)O on MgO(001), was performed. This can be a reference sample for static and dynamic spin-polarization measurements, and connects back to technological applications, being the target of another efficient spin detector, the VLEED polarimeter. The results of the first experiments on the dynamical behaviour of a complex magnetic oxide, La0.7Sr0.3MnO3, are also reported. This material is now of relevant use in spintronics research and holds promises to be of high interest in its dynamical behaviour, particularly close to the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition.
