Abstract
Chemistry, in the use of symbols and formulas and specific terms or whose meaning may be different from that commonly known, has a well-articulated language that needs to be known in order to understand chemical concepts. The acquisition and assimilation of chemical language can therefore be compared to the study of a new language, which is able to describe and present the world around us in its complexity. The thesis will focus on the study of the major difficulties encountered by students in the acquisition and understanding of the correct chemical language and in their historical-epistemological origin. Among them, the lack of abstraction skills of the two-year students stands out, that is, the inability to build logical paths that effectively connect the various levels of chemical language, which are essential for creating a chemical concept. This problem has emerged in recent years perhaps also due to distance learning (DAD). The internship / thesis project that will take place at the ITT "Leonardo da Vinci" of Viterbo working with a class of the first and second year, will be included in this path by providing a questionnaire to evaluate the skills, knowledge and difficulties of the students before the internship, followed by lectures and laboratory activities. In the first class we will work on the concepts of weighting laws up to the elaboration of the atomic theory of Dalton, the problems concerning the nomenclature and the various connections between the symbolic, microscopic and macroscopic world; in the second class the problems concerning the concepts of stoichiometry, molar concentration, percentage composition, evaluation of the minimum molecular mass of a compound and colligative properties will be analyzed. Finally, the development of learning tests and the study of the perception of the subject through them, will complete the vision of teaching effectiveness and will help to raise critical issues and strengths of the strategies implemented.
