Abstract
Today, China is the first country for production of greenhouse gases due to the huge population and the very high development growth of the last decades that require a huge amount of energy. A way to which countries and, in this case, China can reduce the production of is by investing in the renewable energy industry. Based mostly on literature, industry reports and official companies’ annual reports, the thesis analyses the Chinese renewable energy industry with focus on wind and solar energies. Drawing a broad view of the system of the Chinese government policies and support to the industry, the main objective is to analyse the main Chinese companies that produce solar PV and wind turbines comparing them with their international competitors. The path that China is having is different in the two industries: findings demonstrate that Chinese companies that operate in the solar industry predominate it especially taking advantages of their well-established vertical integration. The Chinese companies that, instead, produce wind turbines lack of substantial proprietary technology offering only a limited product variety that make for them difficult to be competitive against the international players. After this analysis, the last chapter analyses the economic relationship between Europe and China for these specific industries. Here it is individualized a possible opportunity for Chinese companies to exploit better technologies.
