With the further development of e-commerce business, the big players, like Amazon and Alibaba Group are reshaping this industry. Both companies have made significant achievement in this field, but what are the real drivers of growth still need to be explored. This paper focuses on the different aspects of competitiveness in e-commerce industry, based on a comprehensive comparison between Amazon and Alibaba. The aims of the thesis are threefold. Firstly, offer an abstract idea of e-commerce worldwide development and a trend predicted in the coming years. Secondly, describe the key factors that contribute to the different performances in three typical e-commerce markets, including the United States, Europe and BRICs countries. Lastly, the thesis aims to study the comparison between Amazon and Alibaba so as to find out how the remarkable achievements are made by these companies. Through this study, it’s obvious to find the importance of e-commerce ecosystem and effective strategies in the development of e-commerce business. Given the difference of business model, this paper draws a personal view about the adaptability of Alibaba’s model in the mature markets.
